More than 2,000 channels can now be received from SES satellite positions over Europe. In the last year the number of broadcast channels broadcast from the 19.2 degrees East, 28.2 degrees East and 23.5 degrees East orbital slots increased from 1,648 to 1,864. The figure includes video, audio and interactive channels. When combined with the SES-owned Sirius satellite at 5 degrees East the figure increases to 2,011. Eutelsat’s Hotbird neighbourhood broadcasts 1,000 video channels.
Last week SES announced the number of available HD channels had now reached 26 following two more launches since the end of 2006. The total number of HD channels available in Europe now stands at 36. (JC)
