TVP maintains its lead

February 2, 2007 09.17 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

According to data produced by TNS OBOP, TVP was by far the most popular broadcaster in Poland in January 2007, its two flagship national channels TVP1 and TVP2 claiming a combined audience share of 45.21% amongst viewers aged 4+. An additional 5.09% watched the regional TVP3 and only 0.74% cable and satellite delivered TVP Polonia. In comparison, Polsat and TVN could only muster 16.05% and 14.79% respectively, while the most watched thematic channel was news-based TVN24 with 2.64%. In the target 18-49 age group, Polsat (18.84%) was in second place behind TVP1 (21.76%) but ahead of both TVP2 (18.53%) and TVN (16.61%). TVN 24 maintained number one spot among thematic services with 1.88%. Separately, reports in the Polish press have exposed an Internet-based piracy scam that allows people to access over 300 films broadcast on TV for less than $15 (€11.5) a month. (CD)
