RTL has confirmed that it is selling its holding in Portugese media company Grupo Media Capital to Grupo Prisa in a deal that will net the Luxembourg media operator proceeds of over €206 million. Last October, Prisa announced it was launching a takeover bid for all of Media Capital.There is speculation that RTL will use its windfall to buy into Impressa, but the company denied talks with RTL. Impresa’s free-to-air channel SIC is closing the gap on Media Capital’s TVI. Its audience daily audience share is up 2.4% year-on-year and now stands at 27.1%.
Other possibilities include investments in Turkey and Poland.
Rumours of a sale first surfaced in the German press in early January, but gathered pace in Portugal yesterday (Thursday) after a report in Journal de Negocios.
