Ten years after its formation the content protection society AEPOC held its annual Anti Piracy Symposium in Geneva on Monday. AEPOC President Jean Grenier said that the introduction of high definition television added a further success factor for pay-TV, but one that must be secured. “The only way to fight piracy is to create sophisticated conditional access systems,” he said. “There is a direct link between the level of piracy and the development of thematic TV services.”
Speakers called for an end to the romantic “Johnny Depp” version of piracy amid the rise of sophisticated operations in the Far East. Irdeto’s Vice President Quality Assurance & Special Projects, Andrew Curle said piracy had gone beyond the kitchen table and that pirates were now well funded operations that offered pension plans to their staff.
