Modern Times Group has signed agreements with Boxer and Canal Digital that will both boost free-TV penetration and strengthen its pay-TV offer in Denmark.

Subscriber levels at Boxer Sweden constantly decreased during 2011, despite the introduction of new HD channels, and increased marketing efforts.

Sales of subscriptions to Sweden’s new terrestrially delivered HD channels have exceeded expectations, according to platform operator Boxer.
Teracom’s terrestrial pay-TV operator Boxer is seeing signs of an end to the subscriber losses that have hit the company for successive quarters.
Two new channels are being added to the Boxer terrestrial platform in Sweden on December 2. Discovery Networks’ TLC, which returned to Europe earlier this year, and Cartoon Network become the 9th and 10th channels to be launched by Boxer so far this year.
Teracom’s pay-TV operations added just 1,000 subscribers over the last 12 months. While subscriber numbers for Boxer in the Swedish domestic market remain stable, buoyed by the recent addition of HD channels, Boxer Denmark and Finland’s PlusTV continue to need investment.
The most recent non-proprietary video compression standard, High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC), also known as H.265, was placed into final draft for ratification in January 2013 and is expected to become the video standard of choice for the next decade. … [Read More...]
