CATV (Cable or Community Antenna Television): Reception of TV signals via cable (wires) rather than over the air.
Caching: Once a website has been requested it is stored on the networks caching server. Next time a user on that network requests the same website, it can be found on the local cashing server instead of having to travel across the Internet.
Catch-up TV: Content that can be downloaded or streamed for viewing for a set period, typically between seven and 28 days, after its initial broadcast.
CI Plus: A technical specification that adds additional security and features to the DVB Common Interface Standard that will allow CI Plus compatible consumer electronic devices, such as Integrated Digital Televisions and set-top boxes, access to a range of pay-TV Services via plug-in CI Plus modules wherever the CI Plus Technology is supported by the local pay-TV Provider.
CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier): A company that competes with the already established local telephone business by providing its own network and switching. The term distinguishes new or potential competitors from established local exchange carriers.
CMTS: Cable Modem Terminating System
Coaxial cable: A high-capacity cable used in communications and video. Cable TV companies use coaxial cable between their fibre loop and user homes and businesses.
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA): A digital technology developed by QUALCOMM. With CDMA, unique digital codes, rather than separate RF frequencies or channels, are used to differentiate subscribers.
Compression: A method for compacting the digital representation of a signal for more efficient transmission or storage.
Connected TV: A television that has the ability to be connected to the internet, pulling in a variety of content, such as news, weather, sports, catch-up TV or video-on-demand, through apps and widgets (also known as Smart TV).
Convergence: The occurrence of two or more things coming together, for example, content and delivery, voice and data transmission and fixed and mobile telephony.
CPE (customers premises equipment): equipment installed in the customer’s premises to receive services.
