Jack Mikaloff, the head of UPC in Romania, has described competition in the country’s telecom market as irrational.
In a wide-ranging interview with ZF, he said that the prices charged by operators had become so low they were starting to hold back investment.
Mikaloff oversaw a 30% reduction in UPC fees in 2008 in a bid to stem falling subscriber numbers.
At the same time, the operator invested €40 million in its network and is now seeing growing take up in digital TV services, PVRs and internet access at speeds of 20 Mbps.
UPC expects the latter trend to continue this autumn, when it launches HD services in Romania.
