According to Dataxis’ research, pay-TV piracy reached 7% of TV households in Latin America, with 11.8 million consumers.
Total illegal access to pay-TV could be positioned as the third largest player on the market, behind América Móvil and DirecTV.
However, Dataxis predicts that piracy will maintain a slight downward trend in the future. By 2022, the number of households having informal access to pay-TV is expected to drop to 11.3 million.
Although it is historically known that analogue cable was the main door of entry for piracy, illegal options on satellite technology are expected to lead from 2020. The change in the trend is explained by the barrier imposed by the digitisation of cable TV networks.
