German commercial TV broadcaster RTL II will close down its OTT service RTL II You on June 30, 2017.
The offer didn’t manage to succeed in the viewer and advertising market, an RTL II spokesman told Broadband TV News, adding that the broadcaster will maintain several formats such as Mjunik on RTL II and continue to expand its social media and online-only activities. They will incorporate the experiences made with RTL II You.
RTL II You launched on May 31, 2016 as an OTT offer combining linear television and on-demand content. The advertising-funded free-to-air service for viewers between 14 and 25 years of age was available as a live-stream on the internet and as an app for smart TV sets, smartphones and tablets.
The traditional TV platforms cable, satellite, IPTV and DTT were not part of the distribution strategy.
The schedule comprised original productions, programmes from TV partners such as joiz and Rocket Beans TV, US series and Japanese cartoons (animes).
