German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland will close down its 3D channel on July 1, 2017.
The last months have shown that Sky 3D is rarely being watched, the broadcaster said in a statement on its website. There was also less and less interesting content for an exciting programme line-up. “3D-TV has unfortunately not proven to be a sustainable development, thus, many TV manufacturers don’t offer this function any longer.”
On its on-demand service Sky Store, Sky Deutschland continues to offer selected movies in 3D.
The broadcaster confirmed to Broadband TV News in October 2016 that it will scrap its 3D channel in mid-2017 and, in return, increase its investment into Ultra HD.
On June 25, 2017, Sky Deutschland closed down the Sky HD Fan Zone which provided viewers with an on-screen overview of the different option channels available during large sports events.
