The speaker of Lithuania’s parliament (Seimas) has said it is necessary to prevent hostile propaganda and illegal TV content distribution in the country.
In a meeting with the speaker Viktoras Pranckietis, Viava Zukiene and Mariumi Daukantu, the respective president and director of the Lithuanian Cable Television Association (LKTA), said that there is currently no body regulating such content, which voliates the law and is often fuelled by hatred towards Lithuania.
The speaker meanwhile said polls have shown that 4.7% of Lithuanian homes watch illegal TV content, though the actual figure could be as high as 20%.
He added that “these figures are alarming and in the near future we will have to find a way to reduce the black economy”.
He also said that the issue of illegal TV content should be included in the agenda of the Parliamentary Culture Committee.
