The Nordic markets have continued to prove fertile ground for online streaming services, with the international players reaping the greatest dividends.
Stockholm-based consultancy Mediavision says subscriptions are growing rapidly with 3.8 million Nordic households ending 2016 with at least one SVOD subscription. This represents an increase of more than 600,000 households compared to the same period last year.
“Towards 2017 the competition is expected to intensify. Services such as Amazon entering the Nordic OTT space and local actors trying to reclaim ground will likely fuel further OTT growth. That is why content – and mainly original content – will be all the more crucial in the years to come,” says Marie Nilsson, CEO at Mediavision.
Within the next year it’s expected that 2 in 5 households will hold an SVOD subscription. However, it’s the global media giants that continue to pull in the greater audiences. Between them Netflix and HBO account for 60 per cent of all SVOD subscriptions in the Nordics.
