Amazon is preparing the launch of its streaming video service Amazon Prime instant Video in the Netherlands in 2017.
Amazon keeps its lips tight about a possible launch in the country, but RTL Nederland CEO Bert Habets said Amazon is now buying VOD rights for a number a TV series including Conviction and Into the Badlands.
Speaking during an interview programme with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, to be broadcast tonight on Dutch public TV, Habets says that the acquisition of the programmes mean that a launch of the service is imminent and could happen within a few months. RTL Nederland owns the VOD service Videoland, offering both SVOD and TVOD.
Amazon currently does not have Dutch shop window, except for its Kindle e-books. In other countries Amazon Prime instant Video is a free add-on to its Prime subscription.
Amazon Prime is now only available in the UK, Austria, and Germany, but the service will probably launch in Italy, Spain and France before the end of 2016. A Prime subscription costs £79 a year in the UK, and €49 in Germany and Austria.
