DVB is making its first foray into the world of Virtual Reality with the EBU’s David Wood leading an investigation into the commercial case for an intervention by the DVB Project.
“There’s enormous investment in development going on,” said Wood. “Right now we have two systems, one based on mobile phones and anther based on headsets, and there could be more”.
The study mission consists of 30 members including the BBC, Qualcomm and Ericsson.
Commented Wood: “We have to have to get three things right if we’re going to have VR. Will it commercially successful? Absolutely, but there’s also motion sickness, and we need to know the type of technology that will be most suited.”
Sky and BT have been contributing in terms of programme production. Wood said one of their conclusions was that the public prefers short form content of around 20 minutes, which in itself presented a challenge to programme makers.
