Google has officially linked its Chromecast technology to its browser.
The company has confirmed that Google Cast is now built into Chrome, allowing users to stream content from their PC direct to a Google Cast dongle or one of the increasing number of TV sets that have the technology built in.
It provides an interesting challenge to Apple and its rival Airplay, which is generally streamed from tablets or phones.
Google Cast was launched as an extension two years ago, capitalising on the demand for the streaming service Netflix, or simply the ability to stream a slide show. By building it into the world’s most popular browser Google has cut out the middleman.
There is also the ability to share with participants on a video call in Google Hangout
In addition to TVs there is now Chromecast Audio and Google has partnered with manufacturers to produce audio as well as video devices.
Users of the latest version of the Chrome browser need to select Cast from the Chrome menu. They should then see the available devices.
