Dutch consumers union Consumentenbond is taking legal action against the streaming service DitIsTV.nl.
The website service consists of a streaming set-top box sold in conjunction with a year’s subscription to “thousands of channels from across the world”, which includes about a hundred Dutch channels as well as premium channels Fox Sports, Ziggo Sport, HBO and Film1, for EUR120.
According to the Consumentenbond, DitIsTV.nl frequently does not deliver the set-top box and is not honouring the number of channels promised to subscribers. According to a spokesperson from DitIsTV.nl to the totaaltv website, the non-delivery was due to a hiccup in the delivery of the box by the manufacturer. All boxes have now been shipped.
Although the subscriptions sold by DitIsTV.nl are clearly sold without the approval of the broadcasters, streaming is not (yet) illegal in the Netherlands, only downloads of pirated material is forbidden. However, servers that distribute these channels are taken offline by the authorities from time to time. Such interventions will make delivery of the promised channels difficult.
