Japanese public broadcaster NHK has begun test transmissions in 4K and 8K ahead of the Rio Olympics that get underway on Friday.
The tests on the BS satellite channels are designed to both prove and popularise the ultra high definition format ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
NHK is holding 8K Super Hi-Vision screenings at six venues in Japan and in Rio de Janiero where it is working on the ground with TV Globo in Brazil, where terrestrial transmissions are taking place.
The opening and closing ceremonies, along five events; judo, swimming, athletics, basketball and the men’s football final will be produced jointly with Olympic Broadcasting Services.
In Europe the coverage is being taken by the Nordic broadcaster Viasat.
