Crunchyroll, a SVOD service specialising in anime and Asian content, is approaching 750,000 paid subscribers and 20 million registered users.
These figures make Crunchyroll a top 10 SVOD in terms of revenue. That’s a 40% increase in growth in 2015 across more than 160 countries, with 80% of Crunchyroll’s subscribers being from the US.
“Crunchyroll should be in the same breath as Netflix and Hulu. They’ve been paving the way for today’s successful Subscription Video On Demand model since 2006. However, instead of focusing on a little bit of everything for everyone, Crunchyroll focused on uniting passionate fans around a shared (and unique) content experience,” according to a PR spokesperson for the service.
Crunchyroll’s umbrella company Ellation has announced a $22 million investment to expand on the success of Crunchyroll’s model and build similar SVOD offerings around “passion audiences”. Ellation was established this year under Otter Media, a joint venture fund between The Chernin Group and AT&T intended to invest in new media companies.
