The DTH platform Tricolor TV has become the first operator in Russia to offer its subscribers a package of Ultra HD channels.
For no additional fee, they can receive the two channels – Tricolor Ultra HD and Insight UHD – contained in the package, with the former aimed at viewers aged 16+ and consisting mostly of full-length Russian and foreign feature films and latter a factual entertainment service produced by Television Entertainment Reality Network (TERN).
In the case of Tricolor Ultra HD, viewers are being offered up to three films a day, plus repeats of content shown over the previous two days. The amount of purchased content for the channel will amount to 100-140 films a year.
Quoting J’son & Partners, ComNews says that 60,000 4K TVs were sold in Russia in 2014, with the number expected to rise to 140,000 this year and 700,000 in 2019.
Meanwhile, Samsung currently accounts for 53% of the 4K TV market in terms of money spent on sets.
Tricolor TV is the leading provider of pay-TV services in Russia, with a market share of some 30%.
It is also driving the take-up of HD services, which are now received by more than 6 million subscribers, or over half of its total.
