The sale of the Hungarian TV station TV2 has taken an unexpected turn, with a deal announced earlier this week claimed to be null and void.
BBJ reports that Károly Fonyó and Lajos Simicska, the owners of Megapolis Media, say they exercised a purchase option to buy TV2 from its current owners owners Zsolt Simon and Yvonne Dederick.
As a result, they add, the deal under which Andrew G. Vajna, the Hungarian-American film producer, claimed to have bought TV2 is not valid.
As previously reported in Broadband TV News, Vajna planned to take out a loan of over HUF20 billion (€64.3 million) to pay for TV2.
Vajna is supportive of the ruling Fidesz party, while Simicska had a falling out with the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán earlier this year.
In an interesting twist to the story, it is understood that should Vajna in fact buy TV2, Dirk Gerkens, the former CEO of RTL Klub, who was critical of the government, would take charge of the station.
