The Russian market for legal video services is likely to be worth R12.9 (€230.2 million) billion by 2018.
Quoting research by J’son & Partners, AKTR and Telecom Daily report that given its value was R7.4 billion in 2014, this represents an average annual growth of 14.9%.
They add that advertising was the main model for monetising online video in 2014, accounting for 66.5% of revenues, and that its share will increase to 72% by 2018.
The study included video services accessed through a STB, OTT, apps for smart TVs and mobile devices, as well as online PPV services and pay-TV operators.
J’son & Partners notes that a reduction in TVOD’s share of the market was largely down to Tricolor TV, Russia’s leading pay-TV operator, moving its movie channels to the basic package in order to make it more attractive.
