The BBC is to rename its two technology-based divisions from the start of the new financial year.
Future Media will be renamed BBC Digital while BBC Technology gets the title BBC Engineering. They will remain under the control of current bosses Ralph Rivera and Matthew Postgate.
BBC staff publication Ariel reported that Future Media’s new name reflects the fact that internet technology is now an established and core part of BBC services.
BBC Digital will be responsible for all of the BBC’s digital media services including BBC Online, BBC Red Button and BBC iPlayer.
BBC Engineering sounds like a throwback to the 1920s, but the BBC is quick to point out that engineers were vital to the BBC’s creation, and they remain vital today.
Under the new arrangement the file-based BBC Archives will sit with BBC Engineering.
