Netflix launched exactly a year ago in the Netherlands. Local premium channels adapted themselves to the newcomer, while public and private broadcasters launched a common S-VOD platform.
Despite being an OTT-only service, Netflix has rapidly proven popular, but Dutch viewers as easily embrace any other service that offers much of the same, whether legal or not.
Netflix was an immediate success with viewers in the Netherlands. Simon Murray of Digital TV Research recently estimated the number of Dutch Netflix subscribers to be around 600,000, while the Telecompaper Consumer Panel said that 7% of the people now subscribe to the SVOD service.
Netflix arrived relatively late in the Netherlands in September 2013, but received an immediate welcome. Launching on the Dutch market was a no-brainer as the country has one of the highest broadband penetrations in the world with an audience that is eager to watch the kind of fare Netflix is offering.
