The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has welcomed the confirmation by the Council of State, the highest court in Greece, that public broadcaster ERT should be put back on air.
The association of Europe’s public broadcasters urged all stakeholders to respect the decision of the court and work together to put ERT back on air.
EBU President, Jean-Paul Philippot said: “we are impressed by reports that the Government now intends to put a temporary public service broadcasting system in place within a matter of days – hiring a substantial number of temporary staff. This will be a huge task. Therefore we appreciate that the Court will oversee the Government’s compliance with the order.”
Philippot said the EBU recognised the importance of change and that broadcasters should adapt to financial, technological and political realities.
The EBU said it was prepared to assist in the establishment of a permanent public service broadcaster in Greece
