Digital take-up is growing in the Romanian subscription TV market, with the total number of homes receiving services amounting to 3.4 million as of the end of 2012.
This, according to an integrated statistical data report on the country’s electronic communications market in 2012 just published by the regulator Ancom, was 13.4% more than a year earlier.
Although 63% of subscribers to digital services opted for DTH reception, the biggest increase in 2012 was recorded in the digital cable sector: while the total number of cable subscribers rose by 6.4% to 3.8 million, those opting for digital cable increased by 40% to 1.24 million, or around 33% of the total.
The number of DTH subscribers, after decreasing in 2011, meanwhile rose by 2% to 2.19 million, while the number of IPTV subscribers increased by 34%, albeit to a still modest 37,000.
All told, 6 million homes, or over 85% of the total, opted for some from of audiovisual programme retransmission service in 2012.
Of the 6 million, 61% lived in urban areas, and of these 80% opted for cable. Meanwhile, in rural areas, 63% chose DTH.
