Boxee does not have any plans to come to Europe at the moment. However, it is, according to Ryan Troy, senior director, business development, interested in partnering to bring the service to other markets.
Speaking in a session on smart TV markets and strategies at the Connected TV World Summit, Troy gave a summary of the performance to date of the Boxee Cloud DVR, launched by the company in November 2012 and currently available in nine US markets.
It has a 99% FTU (First Time User) rate, with 76% using the service to watch 25 channels via an antenna.
Further, 87% are using the DVR, though it is still in Beta and therefore free.
Users on average record 161 programmes a month and 93% use the second screen and 42% watch live TV on the second screen.
PCs account for 58% of usage and mobiles/tablets 42%; in the case of mobile devices, iPads claim a 55% share, followed by iPhones with 27%.
Asked about dynamic ad insertion, Troy said that it was interested in working with partners.
He also said that in the case of rights, the service works within the parameters of fair use in the US.
