YouView is about moving connected TV into the mainstream, according to its CEO Richard Halton.
In a wide-ranging presentation on the platform, he said that it has created an ecosystem in which, for instance, in the absence of an on demand business model that is accepted to work, several (including licence fee, ad funded and target advertising) exist on the platform.
Furthermore, YouView makes no attempt to own the end customer, having adopted a neutral policy.
Commenting on competition, Halton said that Freeview, which is used as a primary service in 11 million UK homes, is helped by YouView to keep pace with the rest of the market as it doesn’t have the ability to keep up with technology developments.
As things stand, only a third of Freeview homes currently have PVRs.
He also said that the platform has had good customer feedback and already undertaken four major software upgrades since its launch.
YouView is working on the second screen experience having introduced an iOS app and preparing to launch an Android one in the near future.
