Pay-TV services are still growing in Europe in spite of the recession, according to research undertaken by the European Audiovisual Observatory and released at the start of this year’s Mip-TV.
It shows that the main private European pay-TV groups had combined consolidated revenues of €35,142 million in 2012, or 3.7% more than a year earlier.
On the other hand, advertising groups saw their consolidated revenues slip by 1% to €20,582 million in the same period, with the total for both groups increasing by 1.9% to €55,724 million.
Among the pay-TV groups, BSkyB had the highest consolidated revenues in 2012 (€8,505 million) and Sky Deutschland saw its grow the most year-on-year (+17.1%).
Significantly, even in a time of recession households are also continuing to show an interest in new services, such as access on any device and transactional VOD.
Both the pay-TV and satellite pay-TV markets also continue to strengthen.
