There has been a sharp upsurge in the number of IPTV subscribers in St Petersburg, Russia’s second city.
Figures issued by the leading telco Rostelecom and published in the local press say that the company already had 80,000 as of this month, compared to only 30,000 a year and a half ago.
Rostelecom launched its service in St Petersburg and the North west of the country in December 2007.
Take-up was disappointing up until around mid-2011, since when the popularity of IPTV has grown throughout the country.
Indeed, as of the end of last year there were already 2.7 million subscribers nationally, and IPTV is soon expected to account for 9% of all pay-TV services.
