Elemental has followed up last week’s announcement by the ITU of first-stage consent to the new HEVC codec with a new software upgrade.
It means that new compression approaches can be incorporated much more quickly than existing fixed hardware encoding and decoding platforms, such as ASICs and DSPs.
Last September, Elemental ran a preview of its H.265 prowess at IBC with a beta demo that exhibited bandwidth reductions of up to 50% compared to H.264.
The ITU/ISO/IEC Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) plans to continue work on a range of extensions to HEVC, including support for 12-bit video as well as 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma formats.
