Slovakia goes digital

Slovak flagSlovakia has become the latest country in Europe to complete the transition to digital broadcasting.

This follows the switch off of its last four analogue transmitters, broadcasting the regional and local TV services in Bardejov, Trnava, Nove Zamky and Kysucke Nove Mesto, along with the multiregional TV Markiza, on the night of December 31/January 1.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development, the transition was undertaken on a gradual basis and took three years to complete.

Although the first (public) and second (commercial) multiplexes can theoretically reach 97.7% and 95.6% of the population respectively – and in fact have been able to do so since July 2011 – there is still potential for increasing this and also improving the current DTT offer.
