Virgin Media has officially launched its TV Anywhere service online and through mobile and tablet devices.
Virgin Media TV Anywhere is a cloud-based service that is now available across the UK on Wi-Fi, regardless of which network the customer is using.
An initial 45 channels will be available as part of the package, including Sky Sports and Sky Movies for premium channel subscribers. It had previously been suggested that the Sky premium channels would not be made available until after the successful completion of new contract negotiations.
Also included are channels from Disney, ESPN, Eurosport and UKTV. Channel 5 is the only public broadcaster to have its linear channels included, though access to TV on demand services from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 is planned for next year. Content from AETN, Aardman Animation and Sky will also be included as this time.
Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media, said: “The world of digital entertainment is moving so fast, consumers are always looking for the next ‘big thing’ to take advantage of the features and connectivity built into today’s gadgets.”
TV Anytime will initially be available on iOS – Virgin does not actually sell either the Apple iPhone or iPad to its mobile customers – with Android to follow in 2013. The application includes embedded social media functionality.
Those with the TiVo receiver will gain extra functionality, such as the ability to schedule, manage and delete recordings, as well as giving the TiVo trademark Thumbs Up/Down. The app also serves as a gesture controlled remote control.
In addition to the apps, Virgin Media has also created a new online destination for laptops and PCs.
