Russian digital pay market grows

The digital pay-TV market in Russia was worth over R9 billion (€224.9 million) in the first half of this year, with 11.7 million homes receiving services.

According to data produced by TelecomDaily and published by AKTR, this was equivalent to a penetration of 21%, compared to 19% late last year and 17.6% in the first half of 2011.

It ads that in Q2 2012, there were 28 million households in Russia receiving pay-TV services, of which 42% opted for digital TV.

Significantly, six companies accounted for 97% of the total digital TV market in Russia.

They were headed by Tricolor TV, which gained over 300,000 subscribers in the first six months of this year, ending June with nearly 8 million.

It was followed by Rostelecom (+280,000), with nearly a million subscribers, Orion Express with 750,000 subscribers and Beeline with 695,000 subscribers.

NTV-Plus and Akado had 652,000 and 515,000 respectively.
