Challenges and opportunities for CDNs

Digital TV in CEE – PRAGUE. IP traffic in Central and Eastern Europe is expected to triple from 2011-14, straining operator networks.

What is more, according to Ed Naef, VP of CSMG, this will not just be a video issue.

In a wide ranging presentation on the CDN (Content Delivery Network) model for service providers, Naef said that the global CDN market will be worth $2.6 billion (€2.08 billion ) in 2012, compared to only $400 million in 2006.

Akamai remains the leading player with a 60% market share, followed by Limelight Networks (10%), CD Networks (5%), Level 3 (3%) and Intermap and Mirror Image (1% each).

He also said that service provider opportunities have moved beyond caching and video distribution to newer value added services, among them content management, DRM and monitoring and analysis.

There are also a number of initiatives taking place in the sector, including Cisco and the OCX Group and Akamai’s Aura Network Solutions managed and licensed CDN offering.
