Cable Europe Labs looking at the home and beyond

Cable Europe Labs, the technical department of trade body Cable Europe, is looking at the technical requirements needed for creating international broadband roaming.

“It’s all predicated on this notion of creating [a] federation, but if you look at the history of cable in Europe, it has been very collaborative,” Peter Percosan, managing director, Cable Europe Labs told Broadband TV News in a video interview.

Percosan said Cable Europe Labs was also looking at municipal Wi-Fi as well as continuing to deliver on the promise in the home, where consumer-purchased routers are coming under pressure.

“As we push speeds beyond 20 Mbps today we’re going to find that they have exceeded their capacities,” said Percosan. “But they do some things well. Many of our customers have printers or disk drives connected. I’m not sure we’re ready to be in the business of being a digital plumber, but we need to find a way of having in some cases multiple home networks.
