Interest in content delivery networks (CDNs) is growing amongst leading telcos in Russia.
According to AKTR and comnews, VimpelCom is currently looking for an equipment supplier for a CDN and expects to finalise a tender in the first half of this year.
MTS is meanwhile using one operated by the company NGENIX but plans to eventually build its own, while MegaFon has operated its own network on a commercial basis since last December.
The latter should cover 14 cities in Russia by the end of Q1 this year. MTS has already been trialling an OTT service named Omlet.ru and all three companies are interested in developing OTT offers.
The CDN market in Russia was worth $3-5 million (€2.28-3.80 million) in 2010 and is believed to be growing by around 30% a year.
