UPC unveils freeSAT plans

IBC 2011- AMSTERDAM. The recently re-launched DTH platform freeSAT will introduce a HD zapper box in early 2012, according to Magnus Ternsjö, the managing director of UPC Broadband’s DTH business.

Speaking at a brunch session organised by Broadband TV News and Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc), he added that it would also introduce a HD DVR later this year.

Although the latter will be manufactured by Humax, no decision has yet been made on who will supply the HD zapper box.

UPC Direct was re-launched as freeSAT in the Czech Republic and Slovakia earlier this month, while the company’s operation in Hungary remains named UPC Direct and that in Romania Focus Sat.

The new freeSAT platform is a pre-pay service that UPC Broadband believes will be able to compete more effectively with Skylink and CS Link in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
