Finland’s ministry of culture has given Digita permission to switch its DVB-H transmissions to the DVB-T2 standard.
While at first glance the decision could be seen as a blow to mobile TV, it comes as the DVB launches the new DVB-T2 Lite protocol. Digita says DVB-T2 will allow it to run a unified service for fixed and mobile reception.
“We are pleased with the decision to change Multiplex D to DVB-T2, a system suitable for mobile reception,” says Digita’s James Harno. “In retrospect, it should be noted that, unfortunately, the Mobile TV market has not established itself within a network, and has been intended only for the mobile phone environment. Digita’s new online content is aimed at cell phones in addition to portable terminals such as laptops, tablet PCs and iPads. This allows us to new and modern way to bring mobile and high-definition content up to the modern consumer’s mobile lifestyle.”
Harno said that Digita strongly believed in portable receivers that would lead to widespread wireless reception.
