The HBO Go app has been downloaded more than a million times, said Eric Kessler, co-president of HBO during his keynote at the Streaming Media East conference. With the app, viewers have access to over 1,400 hours of HBO programming on their iPad, iPhone and Android smartphones.
HBO Go is a video portal that gives unlimited access to HBO premium content, allowing users of the iPad, iPhone and numerous other broadband-connected platforms to instantly watch every episode of every season of the best shows from HBO, plus hundreds of Hollywood hit movies, any time and from any US location – but certainly not outside the US.
The more than 1400 titles offered online include series such as Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood, as well as classics like The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Deadwood, plus HBO original films, miniseries, sports, documentaries and specials, as well as a wide selection of blockbuster theatricals.
“The addition of HBO Go as a mobile app is the latest step in bringing quality HBO programming to our subscribers how and when the want it,” said Kessler. “Giving mobile users the opportunity to experience their favourite HBO show, no matter where they are, dramatically enhances the value of the HBO subscription.”
HBO Go is the first integrated solution in the US, where subscribers to the premium service can access their programming anytime, anywhere via (in HBO speak) “an authenticated online video destination”. It does not allow streaming of the live channel, but it gives access to a wide variety of on-demand programming from the broadcaster.
