Virgin Media begins P2P traffic shaping trial

Virgin Media has begun a one week trial that will see the cableco manage the peaktime upstream traffic generated by peer-to-peer sites and Newsgroups. In a statement published on its website Virgin said that of successful it intended to implement the new policy immediately.

The trial, which began last Wednesday runs between 17.00 and midnight on weekdays and 12.00 and midnight on weekends. It follows what the operators is describing as the successful out of hours trial of its combined upstream and downstream file sharing traffic management policy.

Traffic will be managed in a similar way to downstream traffic. It sets separate usage limits according to the customer’s package,

Virgin is monitoring how the new policy might affect the gaming community.
