BBC Red Button content is being extended to Freesat, adding single stream video services that have previously been absent from the free-to-air platform. Although the BBC Sport Multiscreen has been carried, Freesat homes were deprived of the full range of content that has been available on Sky, Virgin Media, and to a lesser extent Freeview.
The first Red Button service to feature is the Being Human spin-off Becoming Human, which will be available from January 30.
The satellite delivered content uses scheduling tools that launch an MHEG application allowing the viewer to be taken to our interactive streams and back again.
Although not all of the BBC’s Red Button content is currently available on Freesat, homes with the service can take advantage of the BBC iPlayer by connecting their receivers to the internet.
A connected home page was introduced in November and it is hoped that the same will be made available on terrestrial platform Freeview in the next few months.
