Sony is releasing a software update for its PlayStation 3 devices to allow broadband users to stream content on-demand from ITV Player and Channel 4′s 4oD service. The BBC iPlayer is already available on the PS3, while Lovefilm was recently added.
ITV has already announced its intention to make its content available on a cross-platform basis, adding the ITV Player to PlayStation 3.
ITV Player provides content from ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4. “Our viewers want the option to watch their favourite content when and where they choose so distributing the ITV Player, with our rich content, to platforms beyond itv.com will allow us to meet that demand,” said Fru Hazlitt, managing director of commercial and online, ITV. “We’re really excited that they will soon be able to access the ITV Player on demand through the PS3 platform.”
According to Sony there are four million PS3s in use in the UK, and 80% are connected to broadband and used to access online TV.
