The number of 3D sets sold in The Netherlands before the end of the year will be around 85,000, said Gfk”s Barbare Schouten at the 3D Days in Ede, Holland. As recent as September the research organisation predicted 110,000 3D sets would be sold before the end of the year.
According to Schouten, the limited availability of 3D sets and lack of content play a role in the public reluctance. Some major movie titles are exclsuively bundles with sets, e.g. Avatar with Panasonic and Monsters vs Aliens with Samsung.
All major manufacturers are now pushing their 3D product with special bundles, including e free Ps3 console with a Sony 3D set and similar offers from Samsung and Panasonic.
GfK expects that next year some 290,000 3D TVs will be sold and that 50% of all new TV sets sold will be 3D capable by 2014.
