Alcatel-Lucent Velocix is to build a new Content Delivery Network (CDN) for UK ISP TalkTalk ahead of the launch of the YouView hybrid television service. The CDN will run over TalkTalk’s existing high speed IP network and is designed to improve the quality of experience enjoyed by customers viewing broadband-delivered TV.
The CDN announcement, the first made in connection with the deployment of hybrid TV venture YouView in which Talk Talk is a partner, comes in the wake of net neutrality comments made by Erik Huggers, director of BBC Future Media & Technology and YouView CTO Anthony Rose.
Talk Talk, which took on the former HomeChoice network from Tiscali, will use the Velocix 7810 to reduce the cost of TV delivery to customers.
“By enabling our network with Alcatel-Lucent Velocix infrastructure, we will be able to lead the market in digital delivery, further showcasing TalkTalk’s leading innovation in the UK market,” said Max Alexander, TV & Media Director of TalkTalk.
The agreement, also covers managed services, installation and commissioning. Content will be downloaded directly into the Velocix infrastructure and then dynamically distributed across the TalkTalk network to end-users. By delivering the content from within its secure network, rather than from the public internet, TalkTalk is able to guarantee a better user experience to its end users, as well as significantly reducing its peering costs for internet connectivity.
