WESTMINSTER eFORUM: The FUTURE OF DTT. QVC will launch a HD channel on satellite in about two years, according to Richard Burrell, director of media operations, QVC UK.
It will be unable to do so on DTT due to limited capacity, and generally speaking “embryonic channels will be pushed to satellite, which we don’t want.”
Burrell added that although UK DTT has benefited enormously from light touch regulation, especially since 2002/3, now was probably a good time to look again at regulation. Specific areas to examine would include channel number allocation on EPGs.
It will also be important to decide what type of service the industry now wants, namely a diverse multichannel platform or a national HD platform based on the existing public service offering.
