The IRT (Institut fuer Rundfunktechnik) has announced the unexpected death of Gerhard Stoll, who passed away in the late evening of April 9, 2010 at the age of 59 years.
Gerhard Stoll was a sought-after contact person in many gremia, notably the European Broadcasting Union and the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) as well as the Audio Engineering Society (AES). The Emmy Award that he received for his outstanding contributions to the standardisation of the MPEG-1 Layer 2 Audio-Coding technique only partly reflects the credit which he enjoyed worldwide with respect to audio-coding.
“We mourn about an inspiring personality. Gerhard Stoll received great esteem owing to his extraordinary engagement for the broadcast technology. His motivating character and his open nature enthused colleagues and young scientists alike. During all his professional career he maintained his fascination for new ideas,” wrote Dr. Klaus Illgner Fehns and Carsten Schramm of the IRT Executive Management.
