Spain is in the final stages of its transition to digital broadcasting, with the leading cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Seville due to switch off their analogue signals tomorrow (March 30).
El Pais reports that from April 2 there will only be a few areas in Asturia, Castilla y León, Galicia and Canary Islands still to complete the transition, which started off on a trial basis back in July 2007 in Soria.
DTT signals already reach 98.7% of the population, and sales of reception equipment in the last two months have been described as “stratospheric” by Eladio Gutiérrez, the president of Impulse, the organisation promoting the transition.
In the new DTT environment, viewers will be able to access 32 FTA and paid channels distributed on a national basis, as well as regional and local services.
