SVT HD, which is scheduled to close after the conclusion of the Olympic Games in Vancouver on March 1, is planning a return to the air in the late autumn.
The Swedish public broadcaster says the channel will form a part of a wider HD offer over the terrestrial system following the recent announcement by the Radio and TV Authority (RTVV).
SVT HD has been broadcasting on a frequency in the area around the capital Stockholm. Unlike the current transmissions, which have been using DVB-T/MPEG-4, the permanent broadcasts will take advantage of the bandwidth efficiencies of DVB-T2.
Work to rollout the transmissions across Sweden will commence immediately after the games.
The channel continues on satellite and cable.
