Viewers in all cities and major population centres in Russia will be able to view up to 13 digital channels when the country completes analogue switch off in 2015.
The news, published by AKTR, was given at the CSTB conference in Moscow by Dmitry Severov, the deputy minister of communications and mass communications.
He added that priority was being given to the development of digital broadcasting in remote locations, which at present can only receive 2-3 channels.
Severov, also said that under the federal programme viewers in large towns and cities will also be offered three HD and up to 10 mobile TV channels.
Furthermore, digital broadcasting will be introduced this year in Siberia and the Far East of the country.
