DIGITAL SWITCHOVER STRATEGIES – LONDON. Spain’s national public broadcaster RTVE will deploy two DTT multiplexes this year, one of which will carry the proprietary channel TVE HD.
According to Pere Vila, director of planning and technological innovation at RTVE, the first multiplex will offer the channels TV1, TV2, Clan and 24h, while the second, besides TVE HD, will also carry TDP.
He adds that TVE HD is already broadcasting in Valladolid and will also become available in Galicia and the city of Zaragoza later this year.
The aim is for the two multiplexes to reach 90% of the population by the end of 2010.
Several other public broadcasters, including TV3 in Barcelona, are also currently trialling HD channels in Spain.
Vila expects the number of homes in Spain with HD receivers to grow from the current 1 million to 3.5 million by the end of this year.
